The road from Seven Miles to Annotto Bay was not a road at all. It was a negotiation — between red clay and rain, between the mountain and the sea, between what Jamaica promised and what it delivered. My grandmother walked it. My mother walked it. I walked it, too, though by the time I did, someone had paved the worst of it with concrete that cracked in the heat and flooded in the wet season.
Seven Miles was not a town. It was a coordinate — a place people passed through on their way to somewhere else. The nearest school was in Annotto Bay, and to get there you walked, or you didn't go. There was no bus. There was no debate about it.
I went.
