About the Book

In 1892, a committee of ten men fractured American education into isolated subjects. For 130 years, we have taught children to memorize, comply, and perform — while systematically silencing the capabilities that make them human: the ability to create, to think critically, to communicate, to collaborate, to find problems worth solving, and to solve them.

Now AI can do the memorizing and the performing. The question is no longer whether students can recall information. The question is whether they can do what machines cannot.

The STEMbedding Revolution introduces STEM literacy as the Third Core Literacy — alongside reading and math — and defines it as the 4Cs + 2Ps: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Problem-Finding, and Problem-Solving. It provides the 8 Phases of STEMbedding, a practical framework for embedding these capabilities into any lesson, any subject, any grade level.

This is not a book about adding STEM to the schedule. It is a book about reunifying learning — about restoring the integrated intelligence that every child is born with and that 130 years of fragmentation have suppressed. It is a book for teachers, principals, superintendents, and anyone who believes that education should develop human capability, not just measure compliance.

What's Inside

1

The Corner of the In-Between

A boy from Seven Miles, Jamaica, discovers the fracture between what school teaches and what the world demands.

2

Every Child's Full Cognitive Inheritance

The 8 Dimensions of learning — an orchestra of capabilities every child is born with, and school systematically silences.

3

The Literacy We Forgot

How reading and math became 'core' while the capacity to create, investigate, and solve was relegated to elective status.

4

What AI Cannot Do

Six capabilities that 300,000 years of evolution built into every child — and no algorithm can replicate.

5

The 4Cs + 2Ps Formula

Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Problem-Finding, and Problem-Solving — the complete formula.

6

STEMbedding: The 8 Phases

Challenge, Explore, Discover, Analyze, Ideate, Create, Evaluate, Evolve — a cycle that replaces worksheets with investigations.

7

The FaciliMentor Shift

From sage on the stage to the architect of reunified learning — the identity shift every teacher needs.

8

The 1892 Fracture

The Committee of Ten, the Prussian model, and 130 years of fragmented learning — the history that explains everything.

9

Katherine Johnson's Brain

What the 8 Dimensions reveal about the most extraordinary STEM mind of the 20th century.

10

From Ford Heights to the Future

Case studies from classrooms and districts where STEMbedding is already transforming outcomes.

11

The Implementation Playbook

Practical steps for teachers, coaches, principals, and superintendents to make STEM literacy the third core.

12

The Wager

The choice every educator faces: maintain the fracture, or reunify learning before AI makes the decision for us.

Chapter 1: The Corner of the In-Between

The road from Seven Miles to Annotto Bay was not a road at all. It was a negotiation — between red clay and rain, between the mountain and the sea, between what Jamaica promised and what it delivered. My grandmother walked it. My mother walked it. I walked it, too, though by the time I did, someone had paved the worst of it with concrete that cracked in the heat and flooded in the wet season.

Seven Miles was not a town. It was a coordinate — a place people passed through on their way to somewhere else. The nearest school was in Annotto Bay, and to get there you walked, or you didn't go. There was no bus. There was no debate about it.

I went.

Not because I loved school — I did, eventually — but because my grandmother made it clear that the alternative was not an alternative. "You going to school," she said, in a tone that closed the conversation before it opened. She had a way of making statements that sounded like weather: inevitable, impersonal, not subject to appeal.

What Leaders Are Saying

"Marlon Lindsay doesn't just talk about STEM literacy — he redefines it. This book challenges every assumption we've made about how children learn."

Dr. Kecia Ray

Former Executive Director, ISTE

"This book is a call to action. The 4Cs + 2Ps framework gives educators a practical, powerful way to prepare students for a world that demands more than memorization."

Dr. Meria Carstarphen

Former Superintendent, Atlanta Public Schools

"This is the book I wish I had when I first became a superintendent. It gives leaders the language and the framework to make STEM literacy real — not as an add-on, but as the foundation."

Dr. Tiffany Anderson

Superintendent, Topeka Public Schools

"This book is a rare combination of intellectual rigor and practical urgency. It doesn't just describe the problem — it hands you the blueprint."

Dr. Tyrone Howard

Professor, UCLA Graduate School of Education

"This book is not just about STEM — it's about justice. It's about ensuring that every child, regardless of zip code, has access to the full range of human capability."

Dr. Yolanda Abel

Associate Professor, Johns Hopkins University

"This book is a provocation. It challenges the comfortable fiction that STEM education is working and offers a framework that actually could."

Dr. Kamau Bobb

Former Global Lead for Diversity Strategy, Google
